Work in Progress - Access to General Practice in Northern Ireland
Work in progress
We are currently undertaking work in order to produce this publication. Details of when we aim to publish the finalised report are indicated below.
Overall responsibility for securing GP services in Northern Ireland lies with the Department of Health, developing policy and setting priorities, commissioning services and managing and monitoring performance. Services are provided by independent contractors – GPs – under contract. At the end of March 2023, there were just under 2,000 GPs in Northern Ireland, operating out of 318 practices, and with a registered patient population of just over 2m people.
This review will consider:
- Funding and activity in general practice;
- Workforce and workforce planning;
- Progress in the implementation of Multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs); and
- Issues around access in general practice.
It is anticipated that this report will publish in early 2024.
