Governance Issues in Sport NI

16 February 2017

Work in progress

We are currently undertaking work in order to produce this publication.  Details of when we aim to publish the finalised report are indicated below.

Sport NI is the leading public body for the development of sport in Northern Ireland. Its mission is to lead sports development at all levels, producing more participants and more winners.

In March 2015 the Sport NI Board suspended the Chief Executive to conduct an investigation into leadership issues. In July 2015 nine of the 14 Sport NI Board members resigned, while the Chair and Vice Chair of the Board resigned in March 2016. In response to these events, the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure and latterly the Department for Communities, appointed interim Chief Executives, set up an Interim Executive Leadership Team and appointed new Board members and an interim Chair and Vice Chair.

Our report will:

  • examine the circumstances giving rise to these events;
  • examine the adequacy of the governance, leadership and Departmental oversight of Sport NI during a period of internal instability and change; and
  • assess the capacity and capability of Sport NI to deliver its aim and objectives going forward.

We aim to publish our report in 2020.
