NIAO Director Brian O’Neill has taken up the role of Northern Ireland’s Local Government Auditor (LGA).
Brian was designated as LGA by the Department for Communities, with the consent of the Comptroller and Auditor General last year. He takes up the position following the retirement of Colette Kane, who had served as LGA since March 2021.
Commenting on his new role, Brian O’Neill said:
“Councils and local government bodies play a crucial role delivering essential services to citizens across Northern Ireland every day. I look forward to working with officials and elected representatives, supporting them in ensuring sound financial stewardship, continued improvements in efficiency and effectiveness, and the highest standards of public accountability.”
“I would also like to pay tribute to my predecessor, Colette Kane OBE, for her outstanding commitment and professionalism. I am grateful to have the opportunity to build on her many accomplishments in promoting good practice and accountability across, and in partnership with the local government sector.”
