Work in Progress - Managing the Central Government Office Estate
Work in progress
We are currently undertaking work in order to produce this publication. Details of when we aim to publish the finalised report are indicated below.
The Department of Finance is responsible for managing the Northern Ireland Central Government Office Estate, which currently comprises 79 owned and leased office buildings with a total floor area of over 221,000m². In June 2024, the Department published the NICS Office Estate Strategy 2035, setting out its vision for a modern, fit-for-purpose and right-sized office estate. The strategy includes plans to reduce the estate by 40 per cent by 2028, while improving the quality and energy efficiency of accommodation.
Our review will consider:
- How effectively the Department is delivering its current strategy and learning from previous estate initiatives;
- Whether it has a robust understanding of estate utilisation and capacity to inform accommodation decisions;
- How effectively vacant and surplus properties are being managed and disposed of; and
- Whether arrangements for property management are achieving value for money.
We aim to publish our report in early 2027.
