Every year, we offer a limited number of student internships and placements. These opportunities give students hands-on learning about public audit and the role of the NIAO in making sure taxpayer and ratepayer money is spent properly.
Over the course of their time with us, students will broaden their accounting and auditing knowledge, working across different teams and business areas as they develop their understanding of:
- The financial audit process – as you carry out planned audit tests under supervision.
- Public reporting – by participating in research, data analysis and review meetings.
- How public money is spent, as well as accountability and governance structures.
These are paid opportunities – the NIAO is an accredited Living Wage Employer.
Summer Internships
Our one-week Summer Internships run for four-to-six weeks during July and August each year. They are open to Queens University Belfast and Ulster University students who have completed Year Two of their studies ahead of their internship start date. Applications are made through the QUB or UU careers portals and opportunities are usually advertised during the Spring semester.
Placements
Our 12-week Placements are delivered in collaboration with the QUB MAcc Advanced Accounting with Placement programme, and are open to students enrolled on the course undertaking their work-based placement. Applications are made via the course provider and are usually advertised in early Autumn with Interns usually taking up post in January.
