World Environment Day 2025: Recycling Within Our Workplace

At the Northern Ireland Audit Office (NIAO), we’re proud to mark World Environment Day 2025 by sharing how we’re making a difference, starting right here in our own workplace.

Following a well-received presentation by Belfast City Council on Recycling in the Workplace, our Net Zero Team took the initiative to dig deeper into our waste management practices. We reached out to our waste collection service provider to better understand the journey of our waste, from bin to resource, and how we can make smarter, more sustainable choices.

What Happens to Our Waste?

None of the waste generated at our University Street office is sent to landfill or exported. Paper, cardboard, plastic, and metal are recycled.

Food waste is sent for anaerobic digestion and converted into biogas and any non-recyclable waste is sent to a waste-to-energy facility in Belfast, where it is converted into electricity.

This means that every item we discard is either recycled or repurposed into energy, helping us reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a circular economy.

Why It Matters

Recycling and responsible waste management are key components of our commitment to sustainability and achieving net zero. By understanding where our waste goes and how it’s treated, we can make more informed decisions and encourage environmentally conscious habits across our organisation.
